How To Train A Dog
DOG – the man’s best friend. They are very useful. They can provide security and assistance. And most of all they can show you love and care. But in order for you to acquire these special things that these dogs can give, you need to train them first. Training you dog’s behavior is a must, for this is for your benefit as well. The training should start as soon as the dog is in your care. By beginning your training early, you will start your dog off on the right foot to learning his rules and boundaries; he will know what the acceptable behavior is and what is not. The training must be reinforced and always remember that you are the master and not the dog. He should be the one following what you want and not the other way around. So, here are 10 how to’s in training a dog.
Socialize – Dogs, just like human, need to socialize. Once they learn how to handle being in a public environment and how to behave, he can then be introduced slowly to other dogs and allowed to make other friends by allowing them to smell and greet each other. Give them the time to play and interact with other dogs, and most importantly with you. You should know the attitude of your dog, just like knowing the attitude of your child. Basically, dogs are just like children who are still new in interacting with others. They may become shy and aloof at first. So you need to encourage them, bring them to place where he can meet new dogs and other people.
Sit– When on training, bring with you some treats that your dog likes. On sitting, gently pat the dog’s rear as you say sit. If he did, give him a treat. Then walk him a few feet and repeat the command while patting his rear. And give him some reward. Do this everyday until he learns to sit.
Stay – After the dog has learned how to sit, the next thing to teach is to make him stay. Using the lead, tell the dog to sit. After the dog sits, compliment him and reward with a small treat. While putting your hand the stop position, tell the dog to stay and gradually walk back a few feet away while holding the lead. Wait two minutes, then walk back to the dog and praise with a reward. Repeat this step gradually walking a full six feet and returning. After a week, drop the lead and command the dog to stay while you walk thirty feet away. Then practice walking out of sight.
]]>
Shake Hands- Once the dog has learned how to sit, you may now teach him to shake hands. Tell him to sit, and then grab his hand, say “Shake hands“, and shake. Immediately after shaking, feed him some food treat. Everytime he does it, praise him and say words like “Well done.” Keep repeating this process until he gets it.
Stop Chewing- Seeing your newly bought expensive pair of slippers marked with your dog’s teeth is annoying. Not having your cellular phone charged because it’s cut by your dog is disgusting. So for this not to happen anymore, the first thing to do is hide the temptation. Don’t let these things be visible to your cute creature. Provide him with other chew toys. If you catch your dog chewing prohibited things, say a big “NO!” and discuss the issue immediately for him to have the clue that you are disciplining him.
Stop Excessive Barking – Barking is the signature sound of a dog. That is why it is called a dog because it barks. But excessive barking could become annoying not only to your household but also to neighbors. You need to figure out why the dog is barking. Clearly communicate with your dog of what is acceptable barking and what is not.
Stop Digging Holes – There are dogs who just simply like to dig. Some dig for shelter, physical and mental stimulation; and some seek attention. To avoid the digging, give you dog a physical and mental exercise. Give him a proper shelter so that he won’t dig anymore. If you still catch him doing it, reprimand him and spray hose on him. This may be a negative approach but this could force him to stop doing it.
Stop Eating Dog Poop- This behavior is common to puppies but could be carried on until they grow old. Eating other’s poop is not only filthy but could also harm them. To stop this, feed them with well-balanced and nutritional food, more likely twice a day so that that they won’t feel hungry quickly and won’t have the urge to eat other’s poop.
Stop Food Aggression – Food is a temptation any man or animal could not live without. But if a dog snarls or growls at you when he wants that food is alarming. To avoid this, you should train and control him that he has his own feeding time and place. Preferably, it is better to feed him after you and your family had eaten. Do not let him eat with you. Do not let the dog win the food with his growling. He may become spoiled.
10. Stop From Jumping – An enthusiastic greeting from your dog can be flattering. But too much enthusiasm can scare some people especially to non-households.. Owners and visitors alike hate it when your dog unexpectedly jumps up on you, knocking you down, getting you dirty or spilling your packages. To stop the unwanted jump, initial training is to ignore them. Everytime they try to jump at you, turn back. Other method is to place your hand in stop signal against their nose and push them downwards. Or tell him to sit.
Whenever you are trying to change any behavior in your dog the golden rule is to be consistent! Make it very clear to your dog what is, and is not acceptable behavior.

Stop A Dog From Chasing Cat Using Training Aids
You can stop a dog from chasing cat using training aids such as a head collar in the house but it takes time and patience and it is important that your dogs obedience training is up to scratch, particularly commands like, sit, come and leave it. In my experience if you are bringing a new dog or a new cat into your house the initial introduction is very important.
In my experience, cats are very well able to take care of themselves and more often than not the dog is the one who tends to come out of a scuffle with a scratched nose and a bruised ego. However, it is important to establish a hierarchy in your home where you and your family are your dogs pack leaders and the cats must also be above the dog in the pecking order.
]]>
One way of doing this is to always feed your cat before your dog, this will be a clear signal to your dog that he is bottom of the food chain. It is also important that your dog is suitably exercised every day so that he is not frustrated and full of energy as he may see chasing the cat as a way of releasing his pent up energy.
If your dog still persists in chasing the cat at every opportunity then make sure you brush up on his obedience training and you can use a head collar while he is indoors with a line which he cannot snag. When he chases the cat, you can stop him in his tracks and quickly correct this behaviour with a NO or an AH AH. He will eventually learn that this behaviour is unacceptable.
After initial tensions between my 4 cats and dog, mainly from the cats, the dog no longer chases the cats and they actually get on very well now to the extent that the cats have evicted the dog from his own bed and he sleeps on the carpet next to them. Unfortunately, the neighbour’s cat doesn’t get quite as good a reception and hurries through the garden as quickly as possible.
You can definitely stop a dog from chasing cat using training aids but it does require time and a lot of patience. If you want to teach your dog to be well behaved and obedient, you can get a comprehensive dog training handbook at http://www.thedogtrainingsite.info covering all aspects of dog ownership, from understanding your dog to problem-solving to complete obedience work.
Eoin McDonnell is an engineer who has had several dogs and cats over the years. He has learned the importance of obedience training with dogs as a benefit for both the owner AND the dog and establishing a happy relationship with your dog which will last his/her whole life.

How to Pick Out a Dog That Can be Easily Trained
When you’re shopping for a new dog you of course will be expecting for a doggie that will be a good comrade, but you most probably will require one that can be disciplined and schooled tricks. As you’re attempting to train a dog whether it is a Deutsch Drahthaar or a Toy Fox Terrier or a Llewellyn Setter or a Lagotto Romagnolo or a Slovakian Hound that can be obedience disciplined rather easily, it will make your work less complicated when you’re paper training it and teaching it simple personal manner.
Although a dog that’s obstinate can pose some additional work in educating, they can be trained by an individual who’s experienced in dog handing. Nevertheless, if you’re just getting rolling with dog educating, you’ll get cracking a lot quicker if you discover one that can be coached easily. When searching for this character of dog, there are a few things that you should look to in personality, breed and age.
Personality
Just about all people will assure you that a less agitated dog is a whale of a lot more easygoing to train. While it’s probably somewhat simpler to hold this type of dog’s attention, a high-spirited, hyper dog can also be easy to train if you’ve some patience. The key is to lay your hands on a dog that will adhere with you. When you attach with a dog and that dog will follow you anyplace because it thinks about you as a more significant member of its family unit, it will enthusiastically execute anything for you. A dog that enjoys its owner is really simple to coach, irrespective of whether it’s hyperactive or quiet, submissive or dominant.
]]>
A submissive dog will usually demonstrate fewer hard knocks* in conditioning than a dominant one will. To check and see if your companion is submissive, look him or her in the eyes. If your dog looks away 1st, that will let you know of its submission. With lapdogs and puppies, it roles over so that its stomach is bared to you. A submissive dog will just lie down and let you to turn them over. A dominant dog will protest you, attempting to turn them over immediately.
Breed
Your selection of breeds is immense – Curly Coated Retriever and Serbian Mountain Hound to name a couple.
Different breeds are well acknowledged for their trainability. Labs and Retrievers are rightly popular since they’re so easy to train. Nevertheless, the bully breeds are very intelligent animals and will convert to your dearest friend. This includes American bulldogs, pit bulls and English bulldogs. Corgis, Australian shepherds, German shepherds and Dobermans are dogs that are generally easy to train. Terriers and notorious for being hard to train, but they can be schooled and they’ll acquire new accomplishments fast, particularly if you make it worth their time such as giving them a treat. Mixed breed dogs can likewise make exceptional pets that are easy to train.
Age
The old saying is that you can not teach an old dog a new trick and most people think that fully grown dogs cannot be trained, but that is plainly not true. Quite a multitude of full-grown dogs learn even quicker than pups. Adult dogs many times have a better attention span than pups and they’re more adjudicated. Adult dogs can make outstanding pets and can demonstrate to be very easy to train which is a good case to support rescues.
As you pick out a dog, look to one that falls into place with you. Whenever you discover a dog that you’ll bond with, it will make your coaching so much more easygoing.

Top Advice for Caring for Your Dog
Tip 1 – Make sure that your dog’s collar has attached to it an identification tag that shows their name, your name and your contact details. Generally it is best if you just place a phone number on which you can be contacted. By including this on your dog’s collar you are increasing the chances of them being returned to you if they get lost or runaway.
Tip 2 – You need to find out what the laws with regards to registering your dog and having them vaccinated. Today it is a legal requirement that all animals kept as pets are fitted with a microchip. This is done by your vet and generally the cost of having it inserted between the animal’s shoulder blades is around $50. Once inserted the information is then entered into a database and should an animal be lost and found with such a chip they can be returned to you as their owner much more quickly.
Tip 3 – Whenever you are walking your dog away from your property it is important that they are always on a leash. Also check with your local authorities because you may find that certain breeds are classed as dangerous dogs and may be required to be muzzled when out in public.

How To Know If You’re Ready For A Dog
A pet is an important part of any family that includes one. It seems like every family has a dog, and that bringing an animal into the home is an important part of being a unified family. But getting a dog — or any animal — is a major responsibility that should involve a lot of thought. How does a family know that they’re ready for a dog? What kind of plans need to be in place before the dog comes anywhere near your home? When proper planning isn’t instituted there is a much higher chance of the helpless animal ending up in a shelter, which is something no one wants.
Caring for a dog is a joy, but also an enormous obligation that affects every aspect of life. Before bringing a dog into your home, you need to make sure that you can provide the level of attention that the animal needs. When you own a dog you need to be available to the animal every day. If you are a person that works long hours you should consider a pet that requires less time and attention … maybe a fish? If you travel a lot, especially if little time is taken to plan the trips, a dog would be the wrong pet. These animals need time and affection daily. As the pet owner, it is your responsibility to ensure that you can provide an atmosphere appropriate for the health and happiness of your animals.
Another important consideration is the condition the dog is in when you receive him. If you’ve come to the conclusion that you can care for the animal in question, you need to decide which venue to use when acquiring the animal. There are many dogs in shelters and pounds. Does your lifestyle allow you to rescue one of these animals? Although adopting an abused pet is very noble, it is not a process that is possible for every household. If your children are older (perhaps teens) you will be able to adopt. But if your children are small it would be safer for everyone involved to get a puppy. An abused animal is a volatile creature with the ability to lash out in response to triggers that you may not know. A young child is more likely to trigger the fight or flight response in the animal and less likely to be able to respond appropriately.
Whether you bring a puppy or an adult dog into your home, chances are that you will be training the dog at least a little. Each home has unique standards, and you will be teaching these standards to the dog when he initially enters your home. This process takes varying amounts of time depending on the animal’s temperament and the human’s ability to be consistent. If you bring an animal into your home, it is your responsibility to train him. If you are not up for the challenge, and cannot bring the animal to a training program, you should not take on the responsibility of a dog. It’s something seen too often: after a while the owners get fed up with the dog using the floor as a toilet and give it up for adoption. This is not fair to the animal, which will most likely be euthanized in a shelter.
Although having a dog as part of your family would be wonderful, please make sure that you put proper thought into the decision. Make sure that you will be present enough, make sure that you choose the right animal for your family, and make sure that you are ready to handle the responsibility of training your new dog. Remember that these are only some of the considerations to make when you want an animal for your family. If you don’t own your own home, you will need to speak with your landlord to make sure that the animal you choose is acceptable. Between food and vet bills, and possibly a dog deposit to your landlord, an animal is also a financial obligation. I have given you a few things to think about when looking to bring a dog into your home. Please consider all these points, and the many more ways that a dog will affect your life. Along with the games of fetch you will be adding responsibilities to your life. Only you can know if you are ready.

Canine Potty Instruction – Design Training Program Early To Get Better Behavior
It is essential to feed the pet dog with good nutritious food without supplying any more supplements in between its meals. You must set the time for feeding your dog and not show irregularity in feeding. The quantity of the food to be fed to the pet dog should be regulated. Proper time break between the meals and adequate quantity of food will enable the pooch to have a fixed routine of relieving time. The time to defecate is commonly after 30 minutes of feeding the pooch.
How to Maintain your Pet’s Habit?
Take your pet for a regular walk and figure out his toilet habits. Now the other significant move is to let the dog remember the spot where it can relieve itself. So by taking the pooch several times to the same location to defecate, the pooch will also understand that. Puppy training also involves that whenever pooch does the toilet on that precise location then you are required to give compliment to the dog. Therefore, this is how a pet dog learns to defecate at a particular location.
]]>
Good Things Begin Early
You should start to teach the dog toilet training as early as possible. If you are doubtful of the dog defecating time then it may start spoiling the interior of your home. Thus it is essential to give dog the instruction for toilet which is ideal from sanitizing point of view. Belt or harness should be connected on the neck so that you can assist him in finding particular location to defecate.
Other strategy for puppy toilet training is the use of a crate, this will control the pup if they defecate to the place where they rest, by using crate, dog will learn to proceed out at the time of defecate. You should show the dog the way to communicate by hand indication rather that employing voice commands. Hence by making such interactions regularly, dog will get habituated with the signals and understand what you want to show.
You should not count on fast knowledge as these stuff take up time and as it involves canines who take time to learn. The coaching should be imparted to the pet with very clear targets. The dogs are delicate creatures and have swift changes in moods; thus care must be taken to keep on being relaxed and unhurried with them. The pups acquire habits easily and therefore to make them learn new habits, you should be diligent with them.

Housebreaking Your Dog – The Correction
Housebreaking Correction
If the dog has a mistake, try to understand the reason. Was it too much excitement? Does he go only 15 minutes after eating instead of the normal 30? By correcting the reason for the mistake, training can proceed much faster and you can limit the number of mistakes he makes.
Remember the word is ‘correction’ not ‘punishment’. Be careful with your corrections. If you correct too little, it won’t work. If you correct too much, you will create a fearful timid dog instead of the loving companion you crave. Each dog is an individual. Learn to adapt to your dog as he adapts to you.
Acts such as rubbing your dog’s nose in its waste is humiliating and confusing to the dog and therefore counter productive. Never punish your dog for eliminating in the wrong place, as this could cause problems such as submissive urination. Spanking can cause a dog to learn to hide his mistakes in a place you won’t find until much later, and you will miss these opportunities to correct him and further his training.
]]>
If you catch your dog in the act, stay calm. Say ‘NO’ in a loud voice while you pick up the dog or take him immediately outside to the elimination area. When you get him to the elimination area use the command word you’ve chosen for elimination. Praise him when he finishes the job. Leave him out a few more minutes to make sure he’s done before bringing him back in.
Any punishments such as rubbing his nose in his waste, smacking with newspapers, yelling, beating or slapping only confuse and scare the dog. If you find an older accident, don’t bother to try to correct the dog. Dogs cannot connect a past action with present anger and he won’t understand what you are correcting him for. He might act guilty, but this is only because he knows you’re upset. He doesn’t know why you are upset.
Health problems, changes in diet and new situations such as moving to a new home, or adding a new pet or family member can cause a temporary lapse in housebreaking. If you make a change in dog food, do it gradually by mixing a little of the new food with the old, gradually increasing the amount of new food every day. A sudden change of water can cause digestive problems too. If you’re moving or traveling, take along a couple gallons of water from home to mix with the new. Distilled water from the grocery store can also be used.
Verbal correction can be enhanced with a shake can (a can or bottle filled with pennies or other objects to make noise) if you feel one is needed. Expect your puppy to have a few accidents in the house-it’s a normal part of housebreaking. It’s extremely important that you use the supervision and confinement procedures outlined above to minimize the number of accidents. If you allow your puppy to eliminate frequently in the house, he’ll get confused about where he’s supposed to eliminate, which will prolong the housebreaking process.
